10 Lessons to Close the 2010s

Sunset over the Guadalquivir River
Sunset over the Guadalquivir River

At some point in the decade I realized I couldn’t juggle every expected goal. I decided to live by one rule:

I’ll try to live without accumulating regrets.

Ten notes I kept for myself:

  1. Life isn’t fair—stop looking for culprits.
  2. There’s no greatness in suffering.
  3. You’re responsible for decisions, consequences, and how you manage feelings after.
  4. Help others.
  5. Time invested in loved ones is the best time.
  6. “No one fully controls their life—at best, choose to be influenced by those who love you.”
  7. Tell people you love them when you feel it.
  8. Notice what makes you feel whole; it will pass.
  9. It’s okay to be sad; that too shall pass.
  10. You can’t know anyone’s full story—reserve judgment.

Heraclitus said we never step into the same river twice. Here’s to change. Happy 2020.
